BREAKING NEWS

  • NHS staff increasing time spent on mythbusting about dietary supplements

Misinformation on social media has become so prevalent that mythbusting claims about dietary supplements is now a routine part of the work put in by NHS clinical staff. According to the World Cancer Research Fund, false data is putting patients’ health at risk, and increases their chance of getting cancer. The charity says its activities for the next three years are set to highlight the danger that misinformation brings.

  • FA and Alzheimer’s Society Extend Charity Partnership To 2028

The Football Assocation says its charity partnership with Alzheimer’s Society is being extended by two years, making it seven years long. • Amber health alerts issued as forecasters warn of `humid and muggy´ heatwave

Carers across southern and eastern England have been given a new amber heat health alert The warning is in place until next Tuesday. The Met Office says the forecast increased humidity means the temperatures will feel more uncomfortable than in the last heatwave.

  • Patients given `immune reset´ treatment on NHS go into remission

Patients given an “immune reset” treatment on the NHS have gone into remission in what’s being described as a “groundbreaking” discovery. For the first time in the UK, people with severe lupus have been treated with CAR T-cell therapy, which experts believe may also work for illnesses such as multiple sclerosis. The therapy which only needs to be given once, to genetically modify the body’s immune system, could revolutionise treatment and remove the need for lifelong medication.

  • Former unpaid carer urged officials to "get their act together"

A former unpaid carer has urged officials to “get their act together” after they continued to pay carer’s benefit for six months after the death of his husband, potentially landing him with debts of more than £1,300. Chris Farrell says he tried to get the Department for Work and Pensions to stop paying him the benefit of more than 86 pounds per week. Mr Farrell said his anxiety whether he’d be punished despite following the rules left him distressed and unable to move on with his life.

  • Plans dropped to scrap use of fostering panels

The government has dropped plans to scrap the use of fostering panels for carer approval and first reviews. The Department for Education had put forward the idea on the grounds that there was sufficient other scrutiny of foster carers' applications and practice and because panels were regarded as "burdensome" by some carers. However, nine leading children's and fostering charities urged children's minister Josh MacAlister to reconsider, warning that removing panels for approval and first reviews would get rid of an "essential safeguard".
